John Malathronas

About

John is a British/Greek travel author, photographer, occasional blogger and guide book writer, born in Athens and specialising in Greece.

He initially started in travel writing with three narrative travelogues on Brazil, South Africa and Singapore published by Summersdale in the noughties. He then started guidebook research for Michelin and the Rough Guides, which kickstarted a journalistic career. His by-lines can now be found at CNN, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, National Geographic Traveller, The Daily Mail, The  Independent plus others.

He is a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers and the Society of Authors.

Background

Moving between London and Athens from a young age, John has always been travelling.

His natural aptitude for foreign languages (he speaks Greek and German fluently, Spanish and Portuguese very well, plus tourist French and Italian) has allowed him to dig deeper into a country’s culture, most notably his homeland, Greece.

His other love is Brazil, a place he has visited six times to date. The more he travels there, the more his fascination increases.

On the bucket list

To see the Northern Lights and to dip into the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, to climb Nemrut Dag in Turkey, to visit Etosha National Park in Namibia and to photograph the cave paintings of the Serra da Capivara in Piauí, Brazil.
