From outside, the luxury Monarch Beach resort looks almost Tuscan, with terracotta roofs and Italianesque frontage, but inside it’s the epitome of Southern California chic; easy-going elegance all the way

Service is friendly but absolutely on point; the resort’s seven dining options range from tangy ceviche and tacos at Sombra Cantina to succulent steaks at Bourborn Steak. The best of the evening action is around the outdoor firepits, with perfect views of the ocean and – in the foreground – the resort’s superb 18-hole golf course.

There’s an impressive list of amenities (golfboarding, anyone?) including a gym and an award-winning spa, while the resort’s private beach club is just a short walk away – with a regular shuttle from the hotel for when you’re feeling lazy.
