It’s impossible not to be impressed by Ettington’s grandeur and scale; a Gothic sprawl of coloured brickwork, vaulted windows and turrets that rise up above the chimney stacks. Architecture fans will find much to love inside, too, from the rococo ceiling in the Grand Oak room restaurant, to the ornate drawing room with its double-height ceiling and huge windows overlooking the grounds.

In spite of its size, once inside there’s a warm, informal feel to proceedings; bedrooms are contemporary and unfussy, and although the Oak Room restaurant can feel a touch formal, staff are friendly and families are welcome. The hotel is surrounded by 40 acres of lush parkland. Situated in a lush river valley, there’s a lovely air of tranquility around the hotel and grounds.

It’s a good choice for those who like a sense of occasion and good old-fashioned glamour – and don’t mind travelling to sightsee. It’s only six miles away from Stratford, a short tax ride – easy to get to town to visit the attractions, easy to retreat after to country comforts and grandeur.
