Andalusia 7-day Itinerary
Spain
Where to go and what to see in Andalusia to get the most from your trip – a 7-day itinerary from destination expert and travel writer Dana Facaros.
Bucket list experience:
Bigger than a football pitch, this Gothic cathedral was built on the site of Seville’s great mosque, and dazzles with its elaborate portals, forests of pinnacles and flying buttresses.
Elements of the mosque, however, were preserved: the Patio de los Naranjos, with its fountain and orange trees, and the spectacular 105m minaret, La Giralda, symbol of Seville.
Inside, marvel at the world’s largest altarpiece that took 82 years to sculpt, Columbus’s tomb supported by statues of pallbearers, and a masterpiece by Murillo, The Vision of St Anthony.
Tickets include the nearby over-the-top Baroque church of San Salvador.
If you’re don’t mind climbing stairs, and have a head for heights, plump for a vertiginous guided tour of the cathedral rooftop, for views across the city skyline.

If you can’t walk to it from your hotel, your best option is to take a bus or taxi. The nearest metro station (Puerta de Jerez) is 25-minute walk, though the Plaza Nueva light rail station is slightly closed and only 15 minutes’ walk.
Purchase tickets for the cultural tour online (which includes the cathedral and La Giralda) to avoid the queues. Rooftop tours take place once a day in English (limited to visitors over 10 and under 70).
The Cathedral is open all year round, seven days a week, though Sunday morning is reserved for services. In summer months, go early to avoid the heat.

The great civilisations of the past have left a legacy of constructions that still stand out and inspire. Built without the wonders of 20th-century technology, many are also monumental feats of engineering; others offer such grace and beauty, that they’ll literally take your breath away.
