Mount Rushmore National Memorial

  • Keystone, South Dakota, United States of America (USA)

Last updated: 14 May, 2025

Rising stoically from the rugged folds of South Dakota’s Black Hills, Mount Rushmore is at once a triumph of artistry and a symbol of controversy. This massive 60-foot sculpture, carved by 400 workers into the rock face at Black Hills, was built to attract tourists to a remote corner of the Midwest – against the wishes of the native Lakota Sioux; it desecrated their sacred hills.

Sculpted between 1927 and 1941 by Gutzon Borglum – a man as ambitious as the project itself – the monument immortalises four U.S. presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. It has become a symbol of grandeur and American idealism, its scale awe-inspiring, its story complex. Despite fictional portrayals of destruction, the monument endures, framed by whispering pines and cobalt skies.

Getting there & doing it

The best way to visit Mount Rushmore is by car – Rapid City (about 40 minutes away) is the closest hub with car hire options. Organised day tours also depart from Rapid City and nearby Keystone, ideal for those preferring guided context.

Once there, everything is walkable; the Presidential Trail, Visitor Center and Sculptor’s Studio are all easily accessed on foot. There’s no need for a guide, but ranger talks do enrich the experience.

Bring water, comfy shoes, and layers –  the weather changes quickly in the Hills. Allow at least two hours to explore, longer if you’re planning a hike or picnic.

When to do it

The best time to visit is between May and September, when the forest breathes green and trails unfurl beneath soft skies. June and September are the sweet spots – warm but without summer’s high-season crowds.

Evenings bring a hush and a certain stillness; sunset bathes the stone faces in golden light. Morning visits are cooler and quieter, perfect for photography, while midday brings more bustle. In winter, snow transforms the site into something stark and silent – but some paths close, and the monument feels more remote.
