Drifting silently over the ancient monuments of the West Bank, as the sun rises over the Nile, is one of those ‘never forget’ moments. It’s a serene way to appreciate the layout of ancient Luxor, from the temples in the east to valley tombs in the west.
Peer into roofless village houses, unchanged for thousands of years, see the fertile floodplains of the Nile give way to the desert beyond, and marvel at the enormous scale of Karnak temple.
Balloon operators will arrange transfers to/from your hotel and breakfast. Flights last about 40 minutes.
Wear good flat shoes, trousers and long sleeves, as there can be a chill in the air early in the morning. Also take a hat – the burner can be hot. And check before you leave home that your travel insurance policy covers ballooning. Some don’t.
There’s no minimum age, but children need to be at least 1.2m high to see over the basket (generally about 5 years and up). Some operators give 50% discount to children aged 6-12. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Balloon trips run all year round, departing daily before dawn (subject to favourable wind conditions).
