Bucket list experience:

A flamenco dancer wearing a black flamenco dress poses with her arms above her head at the top of a series of steps. She is wearing a red flower in her hair.

Madrid is the capital of flamenco, in the same way that Hollywood is the capital of film. All the stars head to the capital’s famous tablao, or flamenco clubs – the singers to perform the emotion-packed cante jondo (‘deep song’); the dancers to stamp their heels fast and hard in a taconeo, to the percussive strumming of the guitar players.

The combination of the music, dancing and powerful rhythms are irresistible – on the best evenings, you will feel the duende, the ‘demon’ spirit of emotional catharsis, and find yourself shouting Olé!

Getting there & doing it

Always book tickets for a flamenco tablao in advance, either via a tour company, or directly on the club’s websites. Options include the show and a drink (wine, beer, sangria or a soft drink), or the show with tapas or a set dinner menu. Performances last around 90 minutes.

When to do it

Flamenco shows run all year round, seven days a week. Most clubs put on two shows a night: an early one at around 7pm and a late one at around 9pm.
