Snorkel with turtles and string rays on Akumal Reef

  • Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Last updated: 15 May, 2025

Slip into the warm, turquoise shallows of Akumal Bay, and you enter a world few ever see, let alone drift through. Just south of Playa del Carmen, this protected arc of reef and white-sand shore is a sanctuary – not for people, but for green sea turtles, majestic and unhurried, gliding in to feast on the lush seagrass below. Southern stingrays also cruise silently beneath like shadows.

Tours begin directly from the beach, with a short swim out to the seagrass beds a few metres offshore. You don’t have to chase – you gently paddle, hover suspended in the calm, and simply watch and marvel.

Places like this are rare. Access is carefully controlled; guides keep you to defined zones, ensuring these ancient creatures are left in peace. There’s no intrusion, just quiet awe.

Getting there & doing it

Guided snorkel tours depart from Akumal Beach, a 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen. There’s a cark park, changing rooms and a cafe.

A basic swimming ability is required – flotation vests are provided and mandatory, but the tour is only recommended for 8 years up. A licensed guide will lead you on a predefined route that takes you over the sea grass beds, where the turtles graze. Expect to get within a couple of metres or so, although, of course, no touching or interaction is permitted. All equipment is provided.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Calm waters and safety gear make it ideal for families, beginners, and older travellers in good health.

When to do it

The best time to snorkel with turtles in Akumal is November to April, when water clarity is best and currents are minimal. During these months, the turtles are most reliably seen feeding in the shallows. Though the experience is available year-round, summer months bring higher humidity and occasional seaweed influx. For the most serene, rewarding snorkel, visit midweek in the cooler, drier season.

Mornings are ideal – visibility is best and wildlife most active before winds stir up sediment. To avoid crowds, aim to be in the water before 10am. Avoid holidays and weekends when tour groups are most frequent.
