For an institution dating back to 1916 there is nothing stuffy or predictable about Taronga Zoo. It’s newest attraction is an urban eco-lodge located inside a specially designed wildlife enclave called The Sanctuary. Guests share this space with celebrated native species such as kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and platypus.

The Retreat offers a wide range of individually styled rooms, including Animal View Rooms and Treetop Suites, and a fine dining restaurant called Me-Gal.

Apart from being able to see plenty of wildlife from your accommodation, guests also enjoy complimentary access to the zoo itself. Revenue from the Retreat supports conservation work.

Surrounding area

Perched on the water’s edge, Taronga Zoo is surely the prettiest municipal zoo on the planet. It’s surrounded by native bushland which runs down to the harbour. Guests have magnificent views across the water to downtown Sydney and the Sydney Opera House.

Your immediate neighbours at the Retreat are native species such as koalas, wallabies, potoroos and platypus. All guests have complimentary access to the zoo but may also book a private tour of the native wildlife sanctuary.

For maximum impact take a ferry from Circular Quay to get there.
