Bangkok
Central Thailand, Thailand

From dazzling temples to dizzying nightlife, Thailand’s capital is a dish of delicious contradictions, and one of the world’s most dizzying, fast-paced cities.
Best places to stay:
The exquisite Sukhothai, with its Thai-inspired architecture and design, elegant accommodation and peaceful public spaces – featuring ponds, stupas, pagodas and statues – offers a wonderfully serene atmosphere.
The Sukhothai is home to one of Bangkok’s finest hotel pools, a 25m expanse of turquoise surrounded by lush gardens. It’s a luxurious and welcome retreat after a day on Bangkok’s chaotic streets. The Spa Botanica is also one of Bangkok’s best.
A main city artery – often crowded with traffic and dotted with high-rises – busy South Sathorn Road may not be the most attractive of streets, but it’s home to some of Bangkok’s biggest and best hotels, meaning there’s no shortage of excellent restaurants and bars, hidden in the lattice of alleyways that twist away from the busy road. The number of hotels mean there’s always people around, making it safe to wander, and once you’re off the South Sathorn Road the traffic noise soon dies away.
Nearby, lush, sprawling Lumphini Park is a fantastic place for a stroll to take in everyday Bangkok life, from couples canoodling on swan pedal boats to locals limbering up for mass aerobics classes.
The MRT/Underground is five minutes away, but it’s a ten-minute walk to BTS/Skytrain.
