Berlin
Germany

Europe’s hippest capital boasts non-stop nightlife, cutting-edge fashion, cosmopolitan eats and museum treasures galore. At the centre of the World and Cold Wars, it also oozes history, much of it sobering.
Recommended place to stay:
Owned by the same lovely people who run the Honigmond Restaurant-Hotel, this is a wonderfully relaxing place to retreat to after a day’s sightseeing.
The interiors are an ode to a 19th-century country house style with gilt-framed oil paintings, chandeliers, original wood floors, antiques and iron bedsteads. The largest rooms face the street, but the rear ones overlooking the fish pond and Eden-like garden win in the charm stakes.
Considering its prime location close to the main attractions, 15-minutes walk from the city centre, and proximity to the nightlife of Mitte, it’s remarkably good value.
Within a stone’s throw of the U-Bahn and a mere five-minute walk from lively Torstrasse, you can’t escape the ‘best of both worlds’ feeling of this place.
In the surrounding streets, history buffs will enjoy the post-World War II mix of Brandenburg classics, GDR eyesores and ornate imperial churches.
