The childhood home of owner Evelyn Ikrath (who, together with her architect husband, also owns the Hotel Miramonte, a short walk away), this 1920s spa hotel has recently undergone a stylish revamp. Despite its slick and elegant interiors (the work of Japanese interior designer Elma Choung), Haus Hirt still manages to feel informal and friendly – children are welcomed.

Guests enjoy the library filled with art and design books, and the modest yet sublime Aveda spa. The indoor pool is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, boasting spectacular views of the Bad Gastein valley.

Resort

Bad Gastein is a charming ski town that sits atop a giant reservoir of bath-temperature thermal water – this is a resort for ski and spa lovers alike.

The resort has more than 220km of slopes that are ideal for all abilities, especially intermediates. Cross-country skiers will be happy too – there are multiple trails ranging from easy to difficult.

Drive the Grossglockner Alpine High Road

Austria[23.3 miles]

This tortuous alpine road twists and turns 48km into the heart of Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park. The reward is stunning views of Austria’s tallest mountain – the pyramid peak of Grossglockner (3,798m) – and its glacier, the Pasterze. Alpine meadows, forests and idyllic mountain vistas are assured.
