Swim with dolphins, Theater of the Sea, Florida Keys

  • Islamorada, Florida, United States of America (USA)

Last updated: 17 May, 2025

Set in the lush, tropical surroundings of Islamorada in the Florida Keys, Theater of the Sea has been offering marine encounters since 1946, making it one of the oldest marine parks in the U.S. Guests swim with bottlenose dolphins in a natural saltwater lagoon framed by palm trees and mangroves – a setting designed to feel close to the dolphins’ native environment.

The centre offers interactive programmes including swim-with experiences, shallow-water encounters, and trainer-for-a-day sessions. Most dolphins here were born in human care as part of multi-generational programs, while a few were rescued and deemed non-releasable due to injury.

As far as captive dolphin facilities go, it’s up there with the best of them, not only in dolphin care but also in promoting conservation. Trainers use positive reinforcement techniques, with a strong focus on enrichment, animal welfare, and education. While dolphins are not released back into the wild, the park operates with licensing and welfare standards and offers educational presentations about marine conservation, dolphin biology, and behaviour.

The park also includes sea lion and shark encounters, parrot shows, fish & reptile tours, a lagoon-side beach, and a bottomless boat ride.

Getting there & doing it

Theater of the Sea is located in Islamorada, midway along the Florida Keys, about a 1.5-hour drive from Miami or Key West.

Dolphin swim programmes last around 30 minutes, with an additional orientation beforehand. The activity is not strenuous, though participants should be comfortable in water and able to follow basic instructions. Wetsuits and life vests are provided.

Guests can choose from swim, wade, or touch experiences, depending on age and preference. Participants must be aged 7 and over for the swimming experiences, and must be accompanied by a paying adult. However, there is a shallow water swim option for younger children.

Entry tickets are required in addition to experience fees. Booking in advance is recommended, especially in peak seasons.

When to do it

The best time to visit Theater of the Sea is during the winter and spring months – November to April – when humidity is low, temperatures are pleasant, and crowds more manageable. While the facility operates year-round, summer months can bring intense heat and occasional afternoon thunderstorms.

Mornings typically offer the most comfortable conditions for animal interactions, with cooler water temperatures and active dolphins. Early bookings also help avoid heat and peak-hour groups, especially on weekends and holidays. Visiting earlier in the day not only improves comfort but gives you the flexibility to enjoy the rest of the park at your own pace.
