Swim with dolphins in Akaroa, New Zealand

  • Akaroa, South Island, New Zealand

Last updated: 17 May, 2025

Tucked into the dramatic volcanic harbour of Akaroa, just outside Christchurch, lies one of the rarest wildlife experiences on Earth – swimming with Hector’s dolphins, the smallest and rarest dolphin species in the world.

Departing from the charming French-influenced village, tours head out into the sheltered waters of Akaroa Harbour, where these playful, dark-grey dolphins often travel in small, curious pods. The volcanic backdrop, rolling green hills, and clear Pacific waters make it an idyllic setting for a boat ride – even if you’re not getting in the water.

Floating quietly in the water as these dolphins glide past – sometimes circling or echoing your movements – is a soul-enriching treat.

Look out for fur seals, seabirds, and even penguins.

Getting there & doing it

Tours start from Akaroa Harbour, a 90-minute drive from Christchurch.

Dolphin swim experiences typically last 2 to 3 hours, including boat travel and about 45 minutes in the water. Wetsuits, snorkelling gear and flotation aids are provided, but bring swimwear, a towel, warm layers, and a waterproof camera if possible.

The experience is not strenuous but requires moderate swimming ability and comfort in open water. Children 8 years and older can go, depending on swimming ability, but must be accompanied by an adult and feel comfortable in the sea. Viewing-only options are available for younger or less confident travellers.

You’ll return to the harbour after your swim, with options to explore the picturesque town or nearby walking trails. Both dolphin swimming and viewing-only tours are available, with small group sizes for a more personal experience.

When to do it

Hector’s dolphins are year-round residents, but warm, sunny weather enhances comfort in the water. Tours operate year-round, but outside of summer, water temperatures drop significantly, so wetsuits and warm gear become essential. The best time to swim with dolphins in Akaroa is during New Zealand’s summer months – November to March – when sea conditions are calmest and visibility is clearest.

Morning tours are ideal: the sea is usually calmer, wildlife is more active, and the light is perfect for photos and spotting dorsal fins. Booking earlier in the day also helps avoid strong afternoon winds that can develop along the harbour.
