Swim with dolphins at Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

  • Mnemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania

Last updated: 15 May, 2025

Just off Zanzibar’s sun-drenched northeast coast, Mnemba Island is a marine sanctuary of dazzling coral reefs, gin-clear waters, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Here, swimmers can share the sea with bottlenose dolphins, known for their playful curiosity and frequent appearances near the reef.

Tours depart from the fishing village of Matemwe, skimming across calm turquoise shallows before reaching the reef-fringed waters around the island. If conditions are right, you’ll slip into the sea to float quietly as dolphins glide by – sometimes close enough to hear their clicks and whistles underwater.

Beyond dolphins, the area teems with colourful reef fish, sea turtles and vibrant corals. The experience is raw and real – no feeding, no tricks – just a respectful swim in one of the Indian Ocean’s most pristine settings. You’ll surface breathless, smiling, and deeply humbled by the quiet grace of these wild creatures.

  • Mafia Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania

From October to March, the west coast of Mafia Island offers one of the best opportunities to snorkel with the magnificent whale shark.

The biggest fish in the sea, growing up to 12m long with giant gaping maws, these harmless, plankton-feeders are attracted here in numbers by (it is believed) the krill-rich discharge of a nearby shrimp hatchery.

The sharks are massive, but completely harmless, and wild – they’re not fed or enticed towards swimmers. Whale sharks are fast swimmers; watch them pass by, then hop back on the boat to get in front of them again. For the shark’s wellbeing, though, don’t try to touch them or get too close.

Close to shore, and requiring only basic swimming ability, this world-beating experience is also highly accessible.

Getting there & doing it

Tours to Mnemba Island typically begin from Matemwe Beach, about an hour’s drive from Stone Town. Boats take 20–30 minutes to reach the reef.  Tours usually last 2-3 hours, including snorkelling and wildlife watching.

The experience is not overly strenuous, though confident swimming is recommended. Bring a towel, rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen and snorkelling gear if you have it (gear is usually provided). Excursions are either private or small-group, often paired with snorkelling over Mnemba’s coral gardens.

All tours finish back at Matemwe. For those staying further south, transfers can be arranged from most hotels in Zanzibar.

It’s suitable for ages 6 and above, depending on the operator. Children should be accompanied by an adult and comfortable in the water. Life jackets and flotation aids are available for less confident swimmers.

If you’re budget can stretch, you could treat yourself to a stay at the wonderful lodge run by &Beyond.

When to do it

The best time to swim with dolphins near Mnemba Island is during Zanzibar’s dry seasons: June to October and December to February, when seas are calmer and visibility is excellent. Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends, enhancing the sense of seclusion.

Early morning tours (between 6am and 9am) offer the highest chance of dolphin sightings, minimal boat traffic, and ideal sea conditions. Dolphins are more active and approachable in the cooler morning hours. Avoid midday departures when the sun is strongest and marine life is less visible.

For the clearest snorkelling, try to choose a day with little wind and no recent storms.
