Swim with dolphins at Dolphin Plus, Key Largo

  • Key Largo, Florida, United States of America (USA)

Last updated: 31 July, 2025

Set in a serene bayfront location in Key Largo, Dolphin Plus offers intimate, natural-lagoon encounters with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.

You can choose between structured swim programmes, shallow-water encounters (for all ages), and trainer-for-a-day experiences, each designed to foster meaningful connections with these intelligent marine mammals.

Dolphins at Dolphin Plus are born in human care, not captured from the wild, and live in large ocean-fed lagoons. Training is based on positive reinforcement, mental enrichment, and natural behaviour encouragement.

Operating since the 1980s, this pioneering facility focuses on education, conservation, and ethical interaction. They take a low-key, personal approach – far removed from theme park spectacle.

Getting there & doing it

Dolphin Plus is located in Key Largo, Florida, about a 90-minute drive south of Miami along the scenic Overseas Highway. The best way to visit is by rental car; there is ample on-site parking.

Programmes typically last 30–60 minutes, with briefings beforehand. No special gear is required, and flotation devices are provided if needed.

The simple meet-and-greet programs, remaining on land, are suitable for all ages. Swimming experiences are suitable only for kids 7 and up. Bookings should be made in advance, particularly for swim or trainer sessions.

When to do it

The facility is open all year round, seven days a week in peak season, but closes on Monday in the cooler months. The best time to go is from December to May, when the Florida Keys enjoy cooler, drier weather and clearer waters. Summer months (June – August) can be hot and humid.
