Travel bucket list idea:
Delhi, India
For a thoroughly earthy and immersive experience of Old Delhi, hire a cycle rickshaw to take you there and navigate the backstreets and lanes of one of the city’s most atmospheric, if not chaotic, areas.
Despite the clamour and congestion, it’s a vibrant friendly place and a fascinating way to reach the Red Fort and/or the Friday Mosque (Jama Masjid).
Rickshaws weave their way through the chaotic traffic, squeezing through the tightest gaps, so keep knees and elbows in at all times. It can be a little nerve-wracking at first, but the drivers are experienced and know what they’re doing.

You can hail a cycle rickshaw almost anywhere in Old Delhi but a good place to start is on the edge of Old Delhi at Chelmsford Road/Qutab Road, either right outside New Delhi Railway station or, somewhat more relaxed, by its junction with Connaught Circus/Indira Chowk.
Alternatively, pick up a rickshaw outside the Red Fort or Jama Masjid and get a ride home.
Cycle rickshaws are not metered, so you will need to negotiate a price (and possibly a time frame) upfront. Delhi’s rickshaw wallahs have hard lives, so while they may up their prices for the tourist dollar, don’t be too hard on them when agreeing a price.
Avoid the middle part of the day during the hotter summer months. May and June in particular can be very hot and uncomfortable.
