Travel bucket list idea:
The challenging 2-5 day climb up Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak (4,167m), past remote Berber villages and through vast valleys, is only suitable for hikers with a good level of fitness.
From the summit, there are sweeping vistas from the summit of the High Atlas Mountains – and on a clear day, the Atlantic Ocean in one direction, and the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert in the other – worth getting into shape for!
Tour companies offer a range of packages, including meals and equipment – usually 2-to-3-day hikes with a night at Neltner base camp. In winter, allow 4-5 days, with three nights at Neltner, including time to acclimatise.
For very experienced hikers it’s possible to tackle the trail independently in summer and autumn; guides, mules and gear can be hired at the trail start point in Imlil village.
For hikers who are not accustomed to winter climbs, choose a company that schedules an additional day at Neltner base camp to practice using ice axes and crampons.
After, treat yourself to a night or two at the luxurious Kasbah du Toubkal.
Hiking is available all year round, but tackling the trail during summer ensures you avoid any snow/ice. However, some operators recommend early autumn and late spring, believing summers are too hot.
Winter months (November to March) are too cold, and early spring also sees the greatest risk of avalanches.
