This luxurious hotel is surrounded by majestic pine forest on Lake Tahoe’s south shore, a mile from Heavenly’s base station (there is a complimentary shuttle).
Inspired by national park lodges, its monumental lake-view lounge boasts 38-foot-high windows, and a grand staircase made from local hewn logs.
Despite the hotel’s size it feels super cosy, with roaring fires in the public spaces and bedrooms, and lots of nooks for lounging. The 8,500-square-foot spa includes a sublime heated lakeside pool, while the Frank Gehry-designed Brooks Bar is the place for a post-piste beer with a view.
Bistro, one of the hotel’s three restaurants, is one of the most popular places to eat in South Lake Tahoe.
About the resort
Straddling the California-Nevada border, Heavenly is something of a Jekyll and Hyde resort at ground level. The laid-back town of South Lake Tahoe is on the California side, with modern hotels and low-rise shopping centres. Just 50 yards north, in the gambling-legal state of Nevada, is the town of Stateline, characterised by its neon-lit casinos.
Heavenly’s 4,800 acres of skiing make it the biggest of the Lake Tahoe resorts, catering to all abilities. The scenery is fantastic: jaw-dropping views of Lake Tahoe from some slopes, and views of the Nevada desert from others.
